Why not join the Pirate Crew?

Put yourself right in the middle of the action by joining the Pirate City Rollers officials, The Pirate Crew. We are always recruiting officials of all genders – and all levels of prior experience – and welcome all those who are interested in officiating and growing the amazing and fast-paced sport of roller derby.

The Pirate City Rollers are Aotearoa New Zealand’s premier roller derby league, playing at the highest level across the world. The Pirate Crew – our officials – are dedicated to excellence and have experience of roller derby at the highest level. These officials will teach you the fundamentals of the sport and impart their expert knowledge collated from all across the globe to help you reach your pinnacle of your potential.

In Roller Derby there are two types of official: – Referee – Non-Skating Official (NSO)

WHY NOT BECOME A REFEREE?
Referee crews consist of up to seven members who skate around the inside or outside of the track to ensure that the game is played safely and fairly. Over time they develop a keen eye for detail and an ability to make quick decisions, but always have the opportunity to discuss with their crew and make decisions together when they’re uncertain.
Learning to referee is a fantastic way to Roller Skate and be part of a supportive team of internationally renowned officials with a breadth of experience gathered from participating at the highest level across the globe.  There is no experience necessary and  the Pirate Crew will teach you everything you need to know – both in terms of the rules of roller derby, and in terms of basic skating!

WHY NOT BECOME A NON-SKATING OFFICIAL (NSO)?
Non-Skating Officials keep track of the scores, penalties and the clock in order to keep the game running smoothly. They work closely with the Skating Officials, and are equally essential and important part of our Pirate Crew and to any game of roller derby.
Becoming a NSO does not require skating skills or extensive game knowledge; simply a love for the game and a desire to learn more about it. NSOs have some of the best seats in the house, but are far enough away from the action that there’s little risk of injury or colliding with a skater. This means it can be suitable for those with physical limitations, as well as those with a desire to be involved without the need for roller skates.

WHY BECOME A NON-SKATING OFFICIAL NSO?

  • BE A PART OF THE GAME NSOs are an essential part of the game, and the Pirate City Rollers have one of the largest and most experienced crews in the country. This provides opportunity to officiate in Auckland (Tamaki Makarau), across Aotearoa New Zealand, and beyond.
